SIMPLE PAST
The simple past works similarly to the Present simple, unless we use the auxiliary 'did' for all people (including the third person singular 'he / she / it'). In the affirmative, the auxiliary 'did' not appear, instead using the ending 'ed'. This is the way past all the 'regular verbs'
There is a broad set of verbs that do not meet this condition, ie to the affirmative do not use the ending 'ed' but its shape is irregular. There are no rules, so the only way to know your way past is to learn. They are called 'Irregular Verbs'.
